CRD’s John Bell Elected Chair of SIAM Computational Science Group

John Bell, head of the Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering in CRD, has been elected chair of the SIAM Activity Group on Computational Science and Engineering (CS&E). SIAM is the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics. The activity group “fosters collaboration and interaction among applied mathematicians, computer scientists, domain scientists and engineers in those areas of research related to the theory, development, and use of computational technologies for the solution of important problems in science and engineering. The activity group promotes computational science and engineering as an academic discipline and promotes simulation as a mode of scientific discovery on the same level as theory and experiment,” according to the SIAM Web site. Bell’s two-year term ends in December 2008. With more than 1,200 members, the CS&E group is the largest of SIAM’s 15 activity groups.

NERSC Users’ Group Elects Executive Committee

Members of the NERSC Users’ Group have selected 12 people to fill vacancies on the 24-person executive committee (NUGEX). The committee directs the Users’ Group’s activities, works with NERSC management to identify problems and find solutions, and runs a semi-annual membership meeting.

The NUGEX Chair is David Dean of Oak Ridge National Laboratory, and the Vice Chair is Stephane Ethier of Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory.

Job Posting: ESnet Seeking Network Engineer

ESnet’s Operations and Deployment Group (O&DG) has a new posting for a network engineer who will “provide a lead role in support, configuration and testing hardware and OS installations of all ESnet Wide Area Network (WAN) routers, switches and associated equipment, both local and remote.” The engineer will also implement and use tools and measures to improve the performance of systems and operational procedures.
