Registration Now Open for 2007 SciDAC Meeting in Boston


Registration and hotel reservations are now open for the 2007 SciDAC meeting to be held June 24-28 in Boston. SciDAC 2007 will bring together up to three hundred researchers to highlight specific advances made in many research domains. Through invited talks and invited posters, they will offer a sample of the many highlights resulting from SciDAC-funded projects. The conference Web site is http://www.scidac.gov/Conference2007/.

According to conference organizers, “SciDAC 2007 will also be a general celebration of computational science, both within the SciDAC program and worldwide. We will bring together computational scientists from different nations, agencies, programs, and application domains to highlight recent advances in computational science in important areas: from understanding our universe on its largest and smallest scales, to understanding Earth’s climate change and its ramifications for humankind, to developing new energy sources. Application talks will be asked to focus on performance and scaling issues. Enabling technologies talks will be asked to focus on petascale applications and architectures.”


SC07 Tech Paper Submissions Deadline Extended to April 16


SC07, the international conference on high performance computing, networking and storage, has extended submissions for the Technical Program to 11 p.m. Monday, April 16 (Eastern Time). Sponsored by ACM and IEEE, SC07 will be held November 10-16, 2007, in Reno.

For authors of technical papers and Gordon Bell Prize submissions, a new two-part submission process is being used. Authors need to register at the submission web site (http://www.sc-submissions.org) and submit an abstract no later than 11 p.m. Friday, April 6 (Eastern Time). Then, manuscripts need to be uploaded by 11 p.m. Monday, April 16 (Eastern Time).

Panels, tutorial, and workshop submissions are due Monday, April 16, 2007, 11 p.m. Eastern Time.

Applications Are Being Accepted for ACTS Collection Workshop


With the theme “Building Blocks for Reliable and High Performing Computing,” the eighth workshop on the DOE Advanced Computational Software (ACTS) Collection will be held August 21-24, 2007 at Berkeley Lab. The four-day workshop will present an introduction to the ACTS Collection for application scientists whose research demands large amounts of computation, the use of robust numerical algorithms, or combinations of these. The ACTS Collection comprises a set of tools that aim at simplifying the solution of common and important computational problems.

The workshop will include a range of tutorials on the tools currently available in the collection, discussion sessions aimed to solve specific computational needs by the workshop participants, and hands-on practice using NERSC’s state-of-the-art computers. This workshop is open to computational scientists from industry and academia. Registration fees are fully sponsored by the DOE Office of Science. In addition, DOE will sponsor travel expenses and lodging for a limited number of graduate students and postdoctoral fellows.

Japan Selects Kobe as Site for Petascale Supercomputing Center


(Note: the following is an excerpt from a Japanese news release, as translated by Jonathan Carter, head of NERSC User Services.)

“RIKEN, in order to review the location of the Next Generation Supercomputer Facility, established a review committee last July to evaluate proposed sites. Recently, based on the location evaluation report produced by the committee, Kobe and Sendai were comprehensively assessed as locations for the Next Generation Supercomputer Facility. The resulting decision is to make Kobe (Port Island) the site of the Next Generation Supercomputer Facility. Kobe, according to the committee’s assessment, considering the establishment and operational costs and research base, which were the goals of this project, was judged to be the most superior site.

“The Next Generation Super Computer Facility, as part of a project promoted by MEXT, in which RIKEN will take a central role to develop and utilize a leading-edge high efficiency advanced general purpose computer, is a world class facility that will play a central part in advancing computation. Riken is managing this project under its charter to promote large-scale, leading edge research.”
