Michael Wehner Selected as a Lead Author for the 2013 National Climate Assessment Report
Michael Wehner, a climate researcher in Berkeley Lab's Computational Research Division, has been selected as a member of the lead author team for the 2013 National Climate Assessment (NCA) report. Published every four years by the U.S. Global Change Research Program (USGCRP), the National Climate Assessment integrates new information on climate science into the context of larger social, ecological, and policy systems. It is intended to report current climate change impacts and vulnerabilities, evaluate the effectiveness of mitigation and adaption activities, identify knowledge gaps, and to aid the federal government to prioritize climate science investments. The USGCRP began as a presidential initiative in 1989 and was mandated by Congress in the Global Change Research Act of 1990, which called for "a comprehensive and integrated United States research program which will assist the Nation and the world to understand, assess, predict, and respond to human-induced and natural processes of global change." The report will be published in June 2013.
In addition to this new role, Wehner is currently a lead author of Chapter 12, "Long-Term Climate Change: Projections, Commitments and Irreversibility," in the Working Group I contribution to the Fifth Assessment Report (AR5) of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). Lab Staff Invited to CITRIS Workshop on NX NASTRAN Software
CITRIS, the Center for Information Technology Research in the Interest of Society, is sponsoring a two-day workshop on Siemens NX CAE Training to be held January 10– 11 on the UC Berkeley campus. The workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m.– 4:30 p.m. each day in 250 Sutardja Dai Hall. The first day includes an Introduction to NX NASTRAN and Fundamentals of NASTRAN. The second day will cover NX Advanced Simulation Processes.
NX is a next-generation digital product development system with a suite of integrated, fully associative CAD/CAM/CAE applications. NX NASTRAN is a premium computer-aided engineering (CAE) tool for critical engineering computing needs to produce safe, reliable and optimized designs within increasingly shorter design cycle times.
This training program is open to all four CITRIS campuses (UC Berkeley, Davis, Merced and Santa Cruz) and LBNL. Winter 2012 Joint Techs Call for Participation Closes Thursday
Since 1998, the Joint Techs conference series, co-sponsored by the Department of Energy's ESnet Site Coordinating Committee (ESCC) and Internet2, brings together networking experts from research organizations for four days of in-depth discussions, workshops, tutorials, demonstrations and presentations. The conference addresses pressing challenges facing research and education networks, which serve the vast bandwidth needs of research institutions worldwide.
Abstracts for all plenary talks, working-group, birds-of-a-feather sessions, industry updates, tutorials and side meetings for the Winter 2012 ESCC/Internet2 Joint Techs meeting are due by this Thursday, December 8. The Winter 2012 Joint Techs meeting will be hosted by the Louisiana Optical Network (LONI) at the C.B. Pennington Jr. Biomedical Research Center on January 22-26 and will focus on the theme of Enhancing Infrastructure Support for Data Intensive Science. Berkeley Lab Reaches Out to Women in Computing
Although, women comprise the majority of the United States labor force, 60 percent of college graduates in developed countries, most of the of internet users, and start the majority of new companies created each year in the US, they have made surprisingly few inroads into high performance computing, according to a recent editorial in HPCWire. This month, Berkeley Lab Computing Sciences staff reached out to this group at the Grace Hopper Celebration in Portland, Ore.
And back in back in Oakland, Calif., Katie Antypas who heads NERSC's User Services Group gave students from Mills College, historically a college for women, a lesson in parallel computing and a tour of the facility's supercomputers. Growing Black Holes in galaxy cores: Enhanced performance of astrophysical simulations on GPU clusters

We improve performance and scalability of non-standard simulations of evolving stellar systems using several GPU clusters. We apply N-body algorithms to the evolution of growing Black Holes in axisymmetric collisional galaxy cores (e.g. M32, M33, NGC205, Milky Way). We obtained a strong scaling in space (10 -7 to 102 pc) and time (Myr to Gyr), required by these systems, allowing simultaneously a dramatic reduction of execution time and high performance through massive parallelism. Our studies contribute for a better understanding of the dynamics, secular gravitational instabilities, and central rotation, among other physical properties of these systems.
