NERSC Neutrino Hunter Co-authors Science Cover Story
New results from IceCube, the neutrino observatory buried at the South Pole, were featured on the cover of Science Friday, thanks to the help of both NERSC resources and staff. Lisa Gerhardt, formerly of the Nuclear Sciences Division and now with NERSC, was a coauthor on the November 22, 2013 article entitled, "Evidence for High-Energy Extraterrestrial Neutrinos at the IceCube Detector." The IceCube Collaboration relies on NERSC's PDSF system and staff, including Iwona Sakrejda, to sift out neutrino signals from cosmic background noises. »Read more.
CS-Powered Materials Project Tops Scientific American's World-Changing Ideas
Scientific American featured an LBNL Computing Sciences-powered project on its December cover as a top world-changing idea of 2013. The Materials Project is an open, web-hosted database developed in collaboration between LBNL and MIT. It allows scientists using supercomputers and quantum mechanical equations to design "new materials atom by atom, before ever running an experiment," wrote MIT PI's Gerbrand Ceder and Kristin Persson in their article. Many people from the LBNL CS Divisions had a hand in making this possible. NERSC is the computing and database engine for the project where it has been made accessible to scientists around the world through a web-based Science Gateway developed by Shreyas Cholia, David Skinner and Annette Greiner. Dan Gunter of the Advanced Computing for Sciences (ACS) Department of the Computational Research Division led development of the data architecture behind the project. Miriam Brafman of ACS is designing innovative new web interfaces for dynamically exploring the data and launching new analyses. »Read the Scientific American article.
LNBL to Host Bay Area Scientific Computing Day
The Bay Area Scientific Computing Day (BASCD) will be hosted by LBNL on December 11, 2013. BASCD is an annual one-day meeting focused on fostering interactions and collaborations between San Francisco Bay Area researchers in scientific computing, computational science and engineering. Bert de Jong, leader of the Scientific Computing Group in the Computational Research Division, chairs this year's meeting. The speakers at this year's meeting include Kevin Carlberg (Sandia), Erin Carson (UC Berkeley), Lixin Ge (SLAC), Jeff Irion (UC Davis), Lex Kemper (LBNL), Christian Linder (Stanford University), Ding Lu (UC Davis), Ali Mani (Stanford University), François-Henry Rouet (LBNL), Cindy Rubio-Gonzalez (UC Berkeley), Khachik Sargsyan (Sandia) and Samuel Skillman (SLAC).

SC13: ESnet, NERSC, CalTech Bring 90 Gbps Big Data Transfers to Show Floor
ESnet, the Department of Energy's high-bandwidth network, worked with Caltech and DOE's National Energy Research Scientific Computing Center (NERSC) to move large data files at an average 90 gigabits per second (Gbps) to the SC13 conference in Denver. »Read more.
SC13: Erich Strohmaier, Horst Simon Quoted in PCWorld, Wired
Erich Strohmaier, of the Computational Research Division, and Horst Simon, former ALD for Computing Sciences and current Deputy Lab Director, were quoted in a PCWorld article about the unusual concentration of flop/s in this year's Top500 list of supercomputers. Strohmaier and Simon help compile the list every year. »Read the PCWorld article. NERSC Hosts Two-Day Workshop on GW Code Package
On Friday and Saturday, Nov. 22-23, NERSC hosted a training workshop on The BerkeleyGW Package, a set of computer codes that calculates the quasiparticle properties and the optical responses of a large variety of materials from bulk periodic crystals to nanostructures such as slabs, wires and molecules. The workshop was organized by Jack Deslipppe of NERSC and CRD's Andrew Canning was among the presenters. Forty-five participants joined 10 organizers at the workshop. The training is in conjunction with the SciDAC project Scalable Computational Tools for Discovery and Design–Excited State Phenomena in Energy Materials. »Read More.

Link of the Week: Want Women Scientists? Change Girls' Toys!
If you want girls to grow up to be scientists and engineers, then give them more inspiring toys. That's the mission of GoldieBlox, a toy company founded by Stanford engineering school graduate Debbie Sterling, and playfully demonstrated in a video that Adam Mordecai of Upworthy blogged about recently:
"Fewer than 3 in 10 graduates in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are women. And barely 1 in 10 actual engineers are women. Early in a girl's life, the toys marketed to her are usually things that don't encourage her to enter those fields. GoldieBlox intends to change that by teaching them while they are young that these fields can be fun — and apparently epic, by the looks of this super-genius two-minute video," Mordecai writes.
