Attendees of the Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing

Berkeley Lab staff pose in the lab's career fair booth.

With 18,000 attendees, 700 speakers and a mind-boggling array of talks, workshops and networking activities to choose from, this year’s Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing, held in Orlando, Florida Oct. 4 – 6, was the biggest yet. As in years past, Berkeley Lab and staff proudly supported the event, which showcases the achievements of women in computing and seeks to encourage and support women entering the field.

NERSC Operations Technologies Group Leader Elizabeth Bautista co-led a student workshop entitled “Making the most of your Summer Internships,” participated in a Student Opportunities Lab session called “How to be Successful Post-Bachelor’s,” and delivered an informal “Speaker’s Corner” talk: “Filipina Women Daring to Lead.” Juliette Ugirumurera, a postdoctoral research fellow in the Computational Research Division’s Scalable Solvers Group, addressed the topic “Masters or Ph.D.?” during a Student Opportunities Lab.

At the career fair, recruiters Jeff Todd and Natalya Gray fielded inquiries from students, post-docs and faculty interested in internships and fellowships at the lab. Berkeley Lab was a Gold Sponsor of the gathering and sent 20 attendees.

Next year’s conference will be held Sept. 26-28 in Houston.

About Computing Sciences at Berkeley Lab

High performance computing plays a critical role in scientific discovery. Researchers increasingly rely on advances in computer science, mathematics, computational science, data science, and large-scale computing and networking to increase our understanding of ourselves, our planet, and our universe. Berkeley Lab’s Computing Sciences Area researches, develops, and deploys new foundations, tools, and technologies to meet these needs and to advance research across a broad range of scientific disciplines.
