Your Job Type Determines Where to Update Your Information

Everyone, regardless of job type, will update their role (aka “job title”), bio paragraph(s), and photo using the same two databases. Roles are updated at hris.lbl.gov. Bio paragraphs and photos are updated using the Lab’s publication system

  • NON-RESEARCHERS only need to update using hris.lbl.gov and the Lab’s publication system. No other action is required.
  • SCIENTISTS, STAFF, AND LEADERSHIP ACTIVELY ENGAGED IN PUBLICATION AND RESEARCH may need to update information so that it will show up in an additional location, Berkeley Lab Research Profiles.

Follow the instructions below according to the type of job you do at the lab.

Everyone: Update your Role

The job title that displays in the profile by default is the “official” job title that appears in the Lab’s HR data. In many cases, that “official” title probably doesn’t accurately reflect your role at the lab. To change your job title to something more relevant:

  • Log in to the HR Self-Service App: hris.lbl.gov
  • Select the card labeled “Personal Info”
  • The CS Area may have guidance about how your role should appear in this field.
  • Once you have logged into hris.lbl.gov and navigated to your personal info, you can update the fields labeled “Role” and “What I do.” The “What I do” description should be a short sentence that begins with “I,” such as “I provide front-end web services to the Computing Sciences Area.” If you do not fill in “What I do,” the thumbnail bio will display the first 180 characters of your bio (which we’ll discuss in the next step). While your ‘Role’ will update in the public-facing portion of your profile (what is visible to others on the website), what you type into the ‘What I do’ box will not be updated on the public-facing portion of your profile. You will need to also update the Bio portion of your profile to update this information.

Everyone: Update Your Photo and the Bio Portion of Your Profile

No matter what role you fill within Computing Sciences, the primary source for your “bio” or personal “overview” is the Lab’s publication system. To update your bio and upload a current photo:

  • Login to the Lab’s publication system using your Berkeley Lab credentials. Select “LBL” from the blue buttons to get started.
  • From your homepage in the publications management system, you will see a photo card of yourself and your name off to the right hand side of the screen. All user accounts are listed either as “Researcher” or “Delegate.” If you are staff, you will likely be listed as “Delegate.”  If you are listed as a “Researcher,” you will need to complete additional steps. (See the “Researchers Only” instructions).
  • Click on the “Edit My Profile” button at the bottom of the photo card.
  • Update bio information in the “Overview” field. This is the box underneath the Phone Numbers box – you may need to scroll down the page to find it. Once you update this, make sure to scroll down and click the green ‘save’ box at the bottom of the screen.

This information will also appear under your photo on the CS website.

  • To update your photo, click “Manage photo,” which should appear over or near the default humanoid icon in the listing. A professional headshot is preferred. If you don’t have a professional headshot, take advantage of the next CS photo event. If there are no upcoming events, make sure you take a good selfie against a light background with indirect light. If you prefer not to have a photo displayed, simply leave it as-is and the default icon will appear.

Note: It may take up to a week for these changes to be reflected on the CS website.

Researchers Only: Add Your Publications and Experience to the  Bio Portion of Your Profile

Your colleagues at Berkeley Lab and other institutions can learn more about your research activities and publications from the Berkeley Lab Research Profiles site. The Berkeley Lab Research Profiles site is a third-party software application with limited customization options designed to facilitate the discovery and promotion of research.

NOTE: Only the CS Executive and CS Division Leadership’s  Berkeley Lab Research Profiles will be listed on the CS Area website. If you are a CS staff member and don’t fit into either of these categories, but you do have a publication history, you can fill out your publications and experience section and this information will appear on the CS Research websites, once they are launched.  The primary source of data for the Berkeley Lab Research Profiles site is the Lab’s publication system. To update any information on the Berkeley Lab Research Profiles site, you will need to update information on the publication system site.

Here is some more information about the Berkeley Lab Research Profile site:

  • Researcher accounts have public entries at the Lab’s publication system AND profiles.lbl.gov. Their accounts will be designated as ‘researcher’ on the home page of their publication system profile.
  • Researcher designations tell the publication system to look for those people’s publications.
  • Researcher designations were made according to job code, and may not accurately capture the scope of a given person’s activities. Contact [email protected] with questions about this.

If your profile has a ‘researcher’ designation, you can update your research publications and information:

  • Login to the Lab’s publication system using your Berkeley Lab credentials. Select “LBL” from the blue buttons to get started.
  • From your homepage in the publications management system, click on the “Edit My Profile” button at the bottom of the photo card.
  • There are three categories of open-field boxes that you can fill out to describe your professional journey to others: Overview, Research Interests, and Teaching Summary. The Berkeley Lab Research Profiles site will display the whole text field, but the first 180 characters may appear in thumbnail view or under division profiles on area websites. You may want to prioritize information in the first 180 characters because of this.
  • Once you update these boxes, make sure to scroll down and click the green ‘save’ box at the bottom of the window.
  • You can also tag your profile using three categories of predetermined labels: Availability, Fields of Research, and LBNL Publication Labels.
  • You can also note additional roles on your profile under the ‘Experience’ category: UC appointments, Academic appointments, and Non-academic appointments.
  • Once you update these roles, make sure to scroll down and click the green ‘save’ box at the bottom of the window.
