What is the Summer Program?
Each year, the CSA welcomes a select group of student interns and visiting faculty to learn and grow professionally by attending the wide range of lectures, presentations, panels, tours, and the annual poster session. The program is geared towards undergraduate students between their junior and senior years who have completed core courses in computer science, mathematics, and related areas of study or graduate students in any computer or computational science discipline.

Summer researchers work on projects in computational research, high-performance computing, and/or high-speed networking under the guidance of one or more staff members. In summers past, students at Berkeley Lab have worked in such project areas as the following:
- Analysis and solution of network and system-related software problems
- Web-based clients for remote visualization
- Numerical algorithms for nanoscience
- Parallel scientific code templates
- System for generating authorization policy for an information-sharing system
- Scientific computing tools
Projects are designed so that students will complete a major portion of the work during the 10- to 12-week period. The exact starting date is at the mutual convenience of the students and the needs of the program. There are several different ways to apply, and students are encouraged to apply via all eligible paths.
