The Director’s Awards at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) recognize the significant achievements of Berkeley Lab employees. The awards are given annually for accomplishments, leadership, collaboration, multi-disciplinary science, cross-divisional projects, and commitment to excellence in support of the Lab’s mission and strategic goals.

Bhimji and Subramanian are part of the Real-Time Synchrotron Imaging Analysis Team, which was honored “for foundational work building the Advanced Light Source (ALS) imaging superfacility, culminating in the delivery of real-time, AI-driven analysis of microtomography experiments leveraging DOE’s high-performance networks and computing infrastructure.” This collaboration between ALS and NERSC has dramatically accelerated and improved the process by which massive amounts of data captured at the ALS are analyzed at NERSC and returned to ALS researchers in near-real time. Its success has also been a test case for the seamless integration of experimental facilities and high-performance computing (HPC) resources, which underpins the U.S. Department of Energy’s American Science Cloud initiative.

“It’s a great honor to receive this award; it’s the culmination of the work of many people across NERSC and ALS, over many years, to enable real-time HPC workflows for science,” said Bhimji. “These approaches now form the foundation of efforts in the American Science Cloud and Genesis Mission which could further enable transformative science in the coming years.”

About Computing Sciences at Berkeley Lab

High performance computing plays a critical role in scientific discovery. Researchers increasingly rely on advances in computer science, mathematics, computational science, data science, and large-scale computing and networking to increase our understanding of ourselves, our planet, and our universe. Berkeley Lab's Computing Sciences Area researches, develops, and deploys new foundations, tools, and technologies to meet these needs and to advance research across a broad range of scientific disciplines.
