The Computing Sciences Area (CSA) Summer Program will host a record-breaking 180 participants this year. On June 6, division directors Deb Agarwal, Scientific Data (SciData), and Stefan Wild, Applied Mathematics and Computational Research (AMCR), welcome participants in a kick-off event.
“I always look forward to the arrival of our summer students,” said Agarwal. “They bring new ideas and energy to partner with us and advance our research.”
For more than a decade, the CSA Summer Program has offered undergraduate and graduate students in science and engineering the chance to gain research experience working with staff, mentors, and peers in Berkeley Lab’s Computing Sciences Area, including the AMCR and SciData Divisions, Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), and the National Energy Research Scientific Computing (NERSC) Center.
“We are gratified to be able to host such a large group this year,” said Osni Marques, the AMCR Division staff scientist who chairs the program. “Our summer program has grown to accommodate a wide range of participants and backgrounds, and we are richer for it.”
Summer students and student-faculty teams are supported by several programs, including the Department of Energy’s Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) and Community College Internship (CCI) programs; Sustainable Horizon’s faculty-student program called Sustainable Research Pathways; Berkeley Lab’s Workforce Development and Education internship programs; and through Computing Sciences Area direct hires.
In addition to their research experience, summer students participate in hands-on workshops, tours, social events, and talks that span the depth and breadth of research across the Computing Sciences Area.
The program wraps up on August 8 when students and teams present their results to CSA staff, each other, and the wider Lab in a culminating poster session.
“I am especially looking forward to this year’s poster session,” said AMCR’s Wild. “It’s a great chance to see the exciting things our students and teams have achieved over a fast-paced summer.”
