Berkeley Lab Launches New Center for Innovative Financial Technology

July 23, 2010

To help build a bridge between the computational science and financial markets communities, the Center for Innovative Financial Technology (CIFT) has been established in the Computational Research Division at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Read More »

Simulations Show That "Sweaty" Flowers Cool the World

July 19, 2010

For approximately one month a year, the nuclei of lead atoms traveling near the speed of light will collide in the Large Hadron Collider's (LHC) ALICE experiment, generating a fireball about 100,000 times hotter than the core of our Sun. Read More »

Berkeley Lab Hosts Weeklong Intensive Workshop on Cloud Computing

July 15, 2010

The forecast for many aspects of computing definitely calls for clouds, but cutting through the hype and getting a clear picture on the possibilities and limitations of cloud computing requires intensive hands-on sessions. To this end, Berkeley Lab’s Computational Research Division (CRD) is hosting a weeklong workshop on cloud computing from July 19-23.

Exascale for Energy

July 15, 2010

How will the United States satisfy energy demand in a tightening global energy marketplace while, at the same time, reducing greenhouse gas emissions? Exascale computing — expected to be available within the next eight to ten years — may play a crucial role in answering that question by enabling a paradigm shift from test-based to science-based design and engineering. Berkeley Lab Contributes Expertise to New Amazon Web Services Offering

July 13, 2010

Today Amazon Web Services (AWS) launched Cluster Compute Instances for Amazon EC2, which makes high-bandwidth, low-latency high performance computing (HPC) resources available in a cloud-computing environment. To ensure that the new Amazon EC2 service will be able to handle a gamut of demanding HPC applications ranging from electronic design automation to financial services, Amazon Web Services worked closely with researchers at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab). Berkeley Lab Announces New International Center for Computational Science

June 29, 2010

What began as an informal discussion two years ago between a physicist and a computer scientist has led to a new international collaboration aimed at creating computational tools to help scientists make more effective use of new computing technologies, including multicore processors. Read More »

For platinum catalysts, smaller may be better

June 28, 2010

When it comes to metal catalysts, the platinum standard is, well, platinum! However, at about $2,000 an ounce, platinum is more expensive than gold. The high cost of the raw material presents major challenges for the future wide scale use of platinum in fuel cells. Research at the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) suggests that one possible way to meet these challenges is to think small – really small. NERSC and HDF Group Optimize HDF5 Library to Improve I/O Performance

June 28, 2010

A common complaint among air travelers on short trips is that the time it takes to get in and out of the airplane and airports can be as long as the flight itself. In computer terms, that's a classic input/output (I/O) problem. Read More »

Berkeley Lab Team Wins Best Paper Award at Cloud Computing Conference

June 28, 2010

A team of researchers from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has received the Best Paper Award at ScienceCloud 2010, the 1st Workshop on Scientific Cloud Computing sponsored by the Association for Computing Machinery. The paper, “Seeking Supernovae in the Clouds: A Performance Study,” was written by Keith Jackson and Lavanya Ramakrishnan of the Advanced Computing for Science Department (ACS), Karl Runge of the Physics Division and Rollin Thomas of the Computational Cosmology Center (C3).
