CRD’s AMR Methods Accelerate MHD Simulations

May 1, 2004

The annual Supercomputing conference held every November is well known as a sort of international watering hole, where many of the world’s leading experts in high- performance computing gather for a week to take stock of the competition, exchange ideas, and make new connections. At SC2000 in Dallas, Phil Colella, head of the Applied Numerical Algorithms Group at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Steve Jardin, co-leader of the Computational Plasma Physics Group at Princeton… Read More »

Lab Hosts 85 Researchers at Fifth Bay Area Scientific Computing Day

March 1, 2004

Eighty-five researchers in computational science and engineering turned out for the Fifth Bay Area Scientific Computing Day held Saturday, March 13, at Berkeley Lab. The meeting is an informal gathering to encourage the interaction and collaboration of researchers in the San Francisco Bay Area. First LBNL Projects Included in Latest Globus Toolkit

March 1, 2004

The latest version of the Globus Toolkit, GT3.2, contains py Globus and pyGridWare, two components developed as DOE-funded projects by members of the Secure Grid Technologies Group in CRD’s Distributed Systems Department. This marks the first inclusion of Berkeley Lab projects in the toolkit, the latest version of which was released Feb. 16, 2004. “I was very pleased to have our efforts included,” said Keith Jackson, leader of the project. “Now there is a much larger group of… Read More »

Horst Simon Named ALD for Computing Sciences

February 23, 2004

Horst D. Simon, an internationally recognized expert in high performance computing, has been named associate laboratory director for Computing Sciences at Berkeley Lab.  “I’m extremely pleased to have Horst assume this responsibility,” Berkeley Lab Director Charles Shank said in announcing the appointment. “This is a critical time for the Laboratory’s computing sciences programs, and I greatly value Dr. Simon’s leadership. I look forward to working closely with him in these… Read More »

DSD Tools Making Grids Easier to Use

January 1, 2004

At the SC203 conference held last November in Phoenix, the Grid was omnipresent, with speakers and vendors emphasizing the development and deployment of Grid infrastructure and applications. For all its potential, though, actually using Grids can be difficult and time-consuming. That’s where Berkeley Lab’s Distributed Systems Department (DSD) (http://dsd.lbl.gov) comes in. At the conference, DSD staff members demonstrated “wxPyGlobusJobGui”, a graphical user interface which… Read More »

CRD’s Brian Tierney Uses Expertise to Improve Performance of Networked Systems

January 1, 2004

A good mechanic doesn’t just keep a car running, but has a toolkit of expertise and expert tricks to get the most performance out of a vehicle. And so it is with networks and computers, especially when distributed computing sources arelinked by networks to perform as an integrated system. Brian Tierney Brian Tierney of the… Read More »

Improved Algorithms Lead to Lab-Scale Combustion Simulations

January 1, 2004

In spite of its fundamental technological importance, our knowledge of basic combustion processes is surprisingly incomplete. Theoretical combustion science is unable to address the complexity of realistic flames, and laboratory measurements are difficult to interpret and often limited in the types of applicable flames or levels of detail they can provide. CRD’s Center for Computational Sciences and Engineering (CCSE) has teamed with LBNL’s Environmental Energy Technologies… Read More »

James Sethian Receives Prestigious Norbert Wiener Prize in Applied Mathematics

January 1, 2004

James Sethian, head of the Mathematics Department in CRD and a professor of mathematics at the University of California, Berkeley, has been awarded the Norbert Wiener Prize in Applied Mathematics by the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM). The prize, presented Jan. 8 at the joint AMS-SIAM meeting in Phoenix, is awarded for an outstanding contribution to "applied mathematics in the highest and [image class="right"… Read More »

DOE Announces Major INCITE Allocations of NERSC Resources

December 23, 2003

The DOE Office of Science announced today that three key computational science projects have been chosen to receive a total of 4.9 million hours of supercomputing time at the NERSC Center. The projects are expected to significantly advance our understanding of the makeup of the universe, the chemical process by which plants convert sunlight to energy while removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, and the turbulent forces that affect everything from weather to industrial processes. The… Read More »

Berkeley Lab to Showcase HPC, Grids Expertise At SC2003

November 7, 2003

The Computing Sciences organization at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory will demonstrate its leadership in advancing science-driven supercomputing and next-generation Grid tools in a series of demonstrations and presentations at the SC2003 conference in Phoenix. Berkeley Lab, located in booth R231, will feature three days of short technical talks on subjects as diverse as supercomputer performance, data management, applications to improve system and code… Read More »
