Bill Johnston Named to Lead ESnet

September 30, 2003

William E. “Bill,” Johnston, an LBNL senior scientist  who has worked in the fields of networking and high-speed distributed computing since the creation of the Internet, was appointed this week as the project manager for the Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), effective immediately. ESnet is a high-speed network serving thousands of Department of Energy scientists and collaborators worldwide. A pioneer in providing reliable high-bandwidth connections, ESnet provides researchers at… Read More »

NERSC Helps Nearby Supernova Factory Discover Supernovae at a Rate of Eight per Month

September 6, 2003

The Nearby Supernova Factory based at Berkeley Lab has discovered 34 supernovae during its first year of operation and 99 to date — the best performance ever for a "rookie" supernova search. This remarkable discovery rate of eight per month is made possible by a high-speed data link, custom data pipeline software, and NERSC's ability to store and process 50 gigabytes of data every night. Mathematicians Bell, Colella Honored for Contributions to Computational Science and Engineering

June 17, 2003

John B. Bell and Phillip Colella, applied mathematicians at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, have been named as co-recipients of the 2003 SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science and Engineering, awarded by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). According to SIAM President Mac Hyman, the prize “is awarded in the area of computational science in recognition of outstanding… Read More »

ESnet Leaps Ahead By Two Generations, Upgrades Backbone to 10 Gbps

March 18, 2003

The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), the high-performance network funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, has just completed an upgrade to 2.5gigabits (billions of bits or Gbps) per second and 10Gbps in the highest speed portion of the network. Typically, a new generation of data communications bandwidth consists of a fourfold increase in performance. ESnet’s new 10Gbps circuits represent an increase of 16 times existing performance levels, representing a jump of two… Read More »

Lab Quickly Clamps Down on Slammer Worm

January 31, 2003

Some quick thinking by Lab network systems engineer Greg Bell helped protect LBNL, ESnet and other DOE sites from the fast-spreading “SQL Slammer” worm recently. While the Lab had contained the situation within two hours after discovering the attack the evening of Friday, Jan. 24, other organizations weren’t so fortunate. Customers of major banks were unable to use ATMs over the weekend, a major credit card company couldn’t provide users with access to their account information and the… Read More »

Lawrence Berkeley National Lab Leads International Team to Win High-Performance Computing Bandwidth Challenge

November 25, 2002

An international team led by scientists at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory achieved their third consecutive victory in the High-Performance Bandwidth Challenge at the SC2002 Conference on high-performance networking and computing. Read More »

Berkeley Lab to Share Expertise in SC2002 Tech Program, Exhibition

November 4, 2002

Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, a leader in advancing scientific computing for the U.S. Department of Energy, will share its expertise with the high-performance computing and networking community at the SC2002 conference to be held Nov. 16-22 in Baltimore. Berkeley Lab scientists and users of DOE’s National Energy Research Scientific Computing (NERSC) Center located at the Lab will instruct in three tutorials, give one plenary talk, present 10 technical papers, conduct two… Read More »

Caroline Gatti-Bono Named Second Alvarez Fellow in Computational Science

October 15, 2002

As a computational science fellow at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, Caroline Gatti-Bono's research is reaching new heights. She's currently working to create algorithms for studying how atmospheric effects caused by high mountain ranges, such as the Andes, affect climate on the plains below. Read More »

ESnet Teams with Juniper Networks to Put IPv6 Into Production Alongside IPv4

August 27, 2002

The U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Sciences Network (ESnet) recently teamed with Juniper Networks became one of the very first networks to run both IPv4 and IPv6 simultaneously on a large-scale production network connecting hundreds of thousands of scientific researchers around the world. The successful rollout of the next generation Internet Protocol, known at IPv6, in parallel with the ongoing use of the current Internet Protocol (version 4, also known as IPv4), is an important step in… Read More »

Berkeley Lab Team Achieves 10.6 Gigabits/second Data Throughput in 10-Gigabit Ethernet Test

July 3, 2002

BERKELEY, CA – Although there has been a lot of discussion recently about 10-Gigabit Ethernet capability, actually achieving that level of performance in the real world has been difficult. Until now. Last week, a team from Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, which operates some of the world’s most powerful computing, data storage and networking resources for the U.S. Department of Energy, teamed with Force10 Networks (switches), SysKonnect (network interfaces), FineTec Computers… Read More »
