DOE Announces Major INCITE Allocations of NERSC Resources
The DOE Office of Science announced today that three key computational science projects have been chosen to receive a total of 4.9 million hours of supercomputing time at the NERSC Center. NERSC Helps Nearby Supernova Factory Discover Supernovae at a Rate of Eight per Month
The Nearby Supernova Factory based at Berkeley Lab has discovered 34 supernovae during its first year of operation and 99 to date — the best performance ever for a "rookie" supernova search. This remarkable discovery rate of eight per month is made possible by a high-speed data link, custom data pipeline software, and NERSC's ability to store and process 50 gigabytes of data every night. Mathematicians Bell, Colella Honored for Contributions to Computational Science and Engineering
John B. Bell and Phillip Colella, applied mathematicians at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, have been named as co-recipients of the 2003 SIAM/ACM Prize in Computational Science and Engineering, awarded by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). ESnet Leaps Ahead By Two Generations, Upgrades Backbone to 10 Gbps
The Energy Sciences Network (ESnet), the high-performance network funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science, has just completed an upgrade to 2.5gigabits (billions of bits or Gbps) per second and 10Gbps in the highest speed portion of the network. Typically, a new generation of data communications bandwidth consists of a fourfold increase in performance. Lab Quickly Clamps Down on Slammer Worm
Some quick thinking by Lab network systems engineer Greg Bell helped protect LBNL, ESnet and other DOE sites from the fast-spreading “SQL Slammer” worm recently.
